You Are the Beauty in Life

And you don’t need religion to tell you that

Good people who still identify as religious do not like their religion’s authoritarianism, which they can clearly sense. But they may still not leave, despite all that bullying—until their eyes clear and they come to understand that God is a projection. That may prove the key that unlocks the exit door.

Once you realize that your God and His trappings were manmade projections that reflected something real not about the universe but about religious founders, you can breathe, smile, relax, and step into the light of that new understanding.

You can embrace the truth that you are the beauty in life, that you are the arbiter of meaning in your life, that you are the one who cherishes values like justice and equality, and that you are the one capable of love and compassion. The universe may not care about you but you can care about you and you can care about others.

You do not need the trappings of a religion or an occult philosophy in order to live well. Maybe you’ve had it in your head to adopt a very mild form of your religion: maybe you are a religious Jew only a few days a year or so moderate a Christian—say, a Unitarian—that it’s rather unclear what parts of Christianity you actually embrace, beyond a favorite hymn and some community feeling.

Now, you can leave that all behind you easily and calmly, for the sake of the truth and the sake of your dignity. You don’t have to make believe about projected gods and you can stop crediting the universe with consciousness and feelings. You can put all that untruthfulness behind you.

You can finally acknowledge what you have always sensed: the huge disconnect between what believers say God wants them to do and what believers actually do. What explains that huge disconnect? The only explanation that makes sense is that believers do not really believe.

They do not really believe that there is a God who demands that they protect the environment. They do not really believe that there is a God who prohibits them from murdering. They do not really believe that there is a God who demands that they love their neighbor. You’ve always known that believers do not really believe such things, haven’t you?

How can that be? How can a mind be constructed in such a way that it absolutely does not believe what it claims to absolutely believe? To argue that believers are merely hypocritical doesn’t begin to do justice to this strange state of affairs. The idea of hypocrisy suggests a slyness and a deviousness that doesn’t really capture what must be going on in the mind of a believer.

On the one hand, the believer looks to actually believe that there is an all-knowing, all-loving, infallible God. On the other hand, the believer looks to also believe that God is indifferent to him molesting altar boys, beating his wife, or embezzling church funds. This is different from hypocrisy.

Well, you no longer have to tease apart their motives, their odd psychological landscape, or their self-serving projections. You can simply leave them behind and step into the light. You are the beauty in life, a beauty which your religion hid from view under laws, restrictions, rules, and bullying. You might enjoy letting Lighting the Way, in which kirism is introduced, accompany you as step into the light and shine. You are the beauty in life: believe it.
